Two issues were of paramount importance at Glasgow:
- Cutting emissions sufficiently so as to keep warming at 1.5C or below, and
- Setting up a system wherein poor nations, which have been adversely affected by emissions from wealthy countries but have low emissions themselves, would receive aid/reparations from those wealthy countries
Despite 12 days of negotiations, these necessary goals were not achieved.
We’re still hoping to keep warming under 1.5C, but the fact is, we’re on course for 2.4C, which would be catastrophic. And there was lots of talk about furnishing $100 billion in reparations, to be split among ALL the nations damaged by the emissions from countries like ours, but that amount is completely inadequate. There are reports that 50% of these funds would have to be spent on technology manufactured by western nations, leaving even less for poor countries to deal with the climate chaos caused by those same nations. And remember, Hurricane Sandy alone caused $80 billion in damages, so clearly, we must demand that the numbers be much higher.
Read on for analysis and commentary, and for an important action alert. We must remain hopeful! Factions from all parts of the world community showed resistance at Glasgow that has been inspirational and invigorating. There are options like fee-and-dividend that could make the difference, but we, the people, have to remain strong to push for the changes we need.
Now is not the time to give up—it’s the time to act!
