Funny Parody of Chevron Advertisement

The parody was written by Adam McKay, director of the climate movie Don't Look Up. The fake ad was released after InfluenceMap revealed that the five largest fossil fuel companies spend a cumulative $750 million per year on public relations campaigns to make the corporations seem committed to climate action, while spending just 12% of their capital expenditures on low-carbon activities.

Austin Free Store Offers an Alternative

Austin's own Treasure City Thrift is a free store from 1-3pm on the last Sunday of each month, with very low prices the rest of the month.  An alternative to capitalism, free stores are not a new idea.  At a free store in Ridgewood, New York, people are encouraged to bring things they no longer need, but are too nice to throw away, and take things they want or need without any questions asked.

COVID, Climate & Conflict Lead to Global Hunger

An open letter signed by over 200 humanitarian groups calls on world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly to urgently take action on world hunger, citing that one person dies of hunger every four seconds. In an interview with Abby Maxman, president and CEO of Oxfam America, say climate change, COVID and conflicts such as the war in Ukraine are largely to blame for rising hunger, and that “those who are the least responsible are suffering its worst impacts.”

Fascism Returns to Italy

Italy has just elected its first far-right leader since Benito Mussolini. Giorgia Meloni's Brothers of Italy party looks set to win a clear majority in the next Parliament as well. Meloni is also allied with Spain’s far-right Vox party, Poland’s ruling nationalist Law and Justice party, Sweden’s newly formed coalition government led by the anti-immigrant, far-right Sweden Democrats party, which emerged out of Sweden’s neo-Nazi movement. Meloni has vowed to shift the EU’s politics sharply to the right.

More Controversial Cases for Supreme Court

Following a dramatic year of controversial rulings, the Supreme Court began hearing new cases this week.  The court overturned abortion rights and expanded gun rights in June 2022 as the new conservative supermajority began to exert its influence.  This session they will hear cases on Affirmative Action, LGBTQ Equality Versus Religious Liberty, and Election Laws.

The Texas Drought Project was formed in the fall of 2008 when we worked on the first big US climate bill called Waxman-Markey. In the following years, we did much-need climate education and then a series of large successful campaigns.

In the wake of COP26 in Glasgow, we have made a strong push to get people to call, write, and email targeted Texas Democrats in hopes of pushing them and Biden to act boldly for the climate.
