What's happening in Texas?
Here in Texas, all-powerful fossil fuel corporations pulled the strings of seven Texas Democratic congress members. They signed a letter to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi advocating for maintaining fossil fuel subsidies. Conservative estimates put U.S. direct subsidies to the fossil fuel industry at roughly $20 billion per year. This comes as we witnessed a summer of droughts, fires, flooding and hurricanes.
...and across the globe
Meanwhile Antonio Guterres, the United Nations Secretary- General, warned that “unless we collectively change course, there is a high risk of failure” at the upcoming U.N. Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, Scotland.
While many world leaders talk about the existential threat of climate change, their plans to combat it and thus protect all of us are severely lacking.
Success at Glasgow is vital because we are out of time. Top scientists tell us we have at most 2-4 years to severely cut emissions or face catastrophic consequences. If we fail at Glasgow, it’ll be years before an opportunity to change course—anywhere from 6-13 years, as previous conferences have shown.
We must see action now.
